The Tasmanian Devil: The Fast And Furious Life Of Errol Flynn
Rory, Greg Irons from Bonorong Wildlife Park & little Errol
A little Tasmanian devil will do his best to help the survival of his mates.
The devil, named Errol Flynn by the film star's daughter yesterday, will help highlight the plight of the species.
Rory Flynn, 61, arrived in Hobart last week for her first visit to her famous father's birthplace.
She visited Bonorong Wildlife Park near Richmond yesterday to name a devil after her father.
The Hollywood hero of the 1930s and '40s was born at Battery Point on June 20, 1909, and starred in more than 60 movies.
Decades after his death he can still make a difference by raising the profile of the state -- and particularly the devil as a facial cancer threatens to wipe the species out.
Efforts to raise funds for research can be made through Ms Flynn's website www.inlikeflynn.com.
"It's a very proud moment for me," she said.
"If he was around, he would do the same thing and want to help in any way he could to keep these animals from becoming extinct.
"I'm a huge animal lover, so I'd like to do what I can." Errol Flynn Society of Tasmania president Steve Randell had suggested naming a devil after the late star.
"Errol called himself the Tasmanian devil in the first chapter of his autobiography My Wicked, Wicked Ways," he said.
"It's a fitting conclusion to introduce Rory to a devil and have her name it after her father."
Errol the devil will be the mascot for Flynn's 100th birthday celebration in Hobart next year when Ms Flynn will return to the state.

A Request From Rory
Dear friends and collectors,
I have traveled to Tasmania where my father was born to bring all the memorabilia that I own to reside at the museum in Hobart where they are opening a special wing in June for the celebration of my father's 100th birthday. Everyone is invited to a week of celebration film festival etc.
My roots and ancestry go back many generations. My grandfather Prof T.T. Flynn was a well-respected scientist here at the University and my grandmother’s lineage goes all the way back to the famous ship 'Bounty' connecting mid-shipman Edward Young, aid to Fletcher Christian as our direct descendent.
As most people know my father was buried exactly where he did NOT want to be buried by his last wife who left him in an unmarked grave for 20yrs. I feel now that his final resting place will be here in his hometown where he is loved and honored. Here they have named parks after him, erected plaques, one being established in front of the state theatre, and have named awards after him in all the schools he attended.
Please if you are a collector if you could lend or donate some small thing to this museum in appreciation of the big event in June, this would of course enhance this celebration. Your precious items would be cared for and safe under the care of the curator whose job is the Flynn exhibit at the Museum.
If you are like me you may not know where you intend to leave your memorabilia or collection, for our children sometimes do not have the same interest or love or dedication to Errol as you do.
Thank you,
Rory Flynn

A Daughter Remembers Errol Flynn
Several years after the death of her famous father, the teenaged Rory Flynn was discovered by the modeling world and thereafter worked as a high fashion model in New York, London and Paris for nearly a decade. Afterward, she decided to try her talents on the other side of the camera and has since traveled the world as a still photographer for the film industry. Currently, she is happily based in the Hollywood Hills, where she lives with her film producer husband Gideon Amir and their teenaged son Sean, who is carrying on the Flynn name as a successful film and television actor. So, for all the fans who were left wanting more, after Flynn’s untimely death at age 50 in 1959, The Baron of Mulholland offers a new perspective on one of filmdom’s most fascinating real-life characters.

A review of Rory Flynn's "The
Baron of Mulholland'
By Robert Osborne
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Far off the radar screens of booksellers are two revealing inspections of well-known Hollywood celebrities.
One of them is "The Baron of Mulholland: A Daughter Remembers Errol Flynn," a fascinating book by Flynn's daughter Rory (who also is the mother of "Zoey 101's" 18-year-old Sean Flynn, a.k.a. Sean Rio).
Hollywood's great swashbuckler became equally legendary for his rascally offscreen behavior, his pursuit of women and affection for partying and booze. He died in 1959, aged 50.
But Rory's book reveals a side of Papa the public has not been exposed to before, with much of her information delivered via reproductions of handwritten letters from Flynn to his wife, Nora Eddington (Rory's mother), and to Rory herself. Also, there's correspondence from and about her half-brother Sean Flynn, a promising photojournalist who disappeared while covering the Vietnam War.
Rory, a former model, also gives many no-holds-barred opinions about life with father (he apparently was much more of a family man than was ever hinted) and the family dynamics after his death. These are all richly illustrated with numerous photos that have never been published before, many of them taken aboard Flynn's famous yacht, the Zaca, which Orson Welles borrowed as a major setting for his film noir classic "The Lady From Shanghai."
Among the revelations: Stanley Kubrick was interested in Flynn playing Humbert Humbert in "Lolita," but Flynn, despite his wilting career and eagerness for the role, said he would only do it if Kubrick would cast Flynn's girlfriend in the title role, which the director would not do.
The book is published by Xlibris, an Internet based print-on-demand publisher.
Give the Lady a Hand!
A review of Rory Flynn's "The
Baron of Mulholland'
by Thomas McNulty
For readers interested in getting to the heart of the matter, Rory Flynn's
book "The Baron of Mulholland" is a triumphant success.
Everything that follows is my explanation for that statement.
"The Baron of Mulholland" is published by Xlibris, an
Internet based print-on-demand publisher. Xlibris books are available through
their website or through Amazon.com. I suppose there are those who frown
upon print-on-demand publishing and so will avoid purchasing a book such
as this. That's their mistake because print-on-demand publishing is here
to stay. As for Rory's book, the end result was worth her effort. "The
Baron of Mulholland" makes fascinating reading.
My first reaction to the book remains positive, due primarily to its
superior design. It's beautiful the way such books should be and beautiful
is precisely the right word to describe so many of the rare photographs.
Great care and thought went into the creation of this book and it shows
on every page.
The book bears the multiple subtitles of "A daughters remembers" and
"A photo memoir" and both are apt indicators of the contents. The first
section, titled "The Romance" consists entirely of reproductions of letters
Flynn wrote to Nora Eddington, his second wife. Flynn's handwriting sometimes
requires diligence depending upon his state of mind during the composition.
Having read many of Flynn's letters over the years I was pleased to see
these rarely revealed missives because they often uncover a gentler, romantic
side to Flynn's nature. This is the Errol Flynn the public and the film
critics never saw. Writing to Nora from his Mulholland Farm Flynn tells
her, "A wind blows outside, whistling around the place in a very lonely
manner - there's something very forlorn about a wind about a house..."
This section is illustrated with images culled from newspapers, magazines
and Rory's private scrapbooks and establishes the right tone for everything
that follows.
I shall abstain from describing the remainder of this marvelous book's
contents because readers need to discover for themselves the treasures
found herein. I will mention the final section is dedicated to Sean Flynn
and reading it was a deeply moving experience for me. The photographs here
are along the same mixture of clippings and personal photos, prefaced by
one astonishing photograph of Sean Flynn parachuting (presumably into Vietnam)
and holding his camera aloft to photograph himself. His father's adventuresome
spirit was very much a part of his life and his disappearance and presumed
death in Vietnam is a wound that will never heal for his family.
I think Rory Flynn should also be credited for her diplomatic handling
of certain sensitive family matters. She avoids any blatant bashing of
individuals with whom she may be at odds, perhaps reserving her public
animosity only for Patrice Wymore. Regarding Wymore, Rory states "Pat Wymore,
who, apparently had felt humiliated by my father because he had taken a
much younger girlfriend for the last two years of his life, had him interred
in an unmarked plot in Forest Lawn Memorial Park..." Thanks to Rory and
her sister Deirdre their father's resting place now has a bronze marker,
but her anger at Wymore fairly jumps from the page all these decades later.
I have but one modest and entirely selfish complaint about this book
- because certain candid photographs presented here are not given much
space I wish a few of the better ones had been reproduced in a larger size.
With that said, I have no doubt others will feel obligated to nitpick about
this book, but to them I will say but one thing: there is an Errol Flynn
renaissance underway so just shut-up and enjoy it.
Rory Flynn's affection for her father is evident throughout. This is
a wonderful book for Flynn fans around the world. I consider it among my
favorite books. Rumored to be forthcoming for years, I for one am thrilled
that Rory has finally realized her dream and published this long awaited
book. The last page is a photograph of Rory's son Sean and Arnella's son
Luke. It is impossible not to wish the best for them when looking at this
photograph. It's the perfect final page to a wonderful book.
I have written this because of that adventuresome spirit that we saw
flickering up on the silver screen and who inspired us all during the turbulent
times of our lives. Due in a large part to our interest in Errol Flynn
many of us have improved our lives in ways we never thought possible. And
so Mr. Flynn has taken to the stage once again thanks to the efforts of
his daughter, and ladies and gentleman, he deserves our attention, and
his daughter deserves a round of applause for making it so. Give the lady
a hand!
Tastefully done, superb job Rory!

Book offers insight into a man who quite possibly was the most complex actor to grace the big screen. A must read for all hardcore Flynn buffs and certainly entertaining for even the most casual of fans. When she recalls her last evening with her dad and the events surrounding the day it is impossible to lay the book down. Also found the rare pictures and letters to be fascinating to read and look at. Very, very good piece of touching work by a daughter who obviously still adores her father.

Rory Flynn's book provides a fascinating insight into a complex and enigmatic man who led an extroadinary life.
I defy anyone not to be moved by her reminiscences of her father especially her memories of the last evening she spent with him.
The book is a genuine, warm and heartfelt memoir which deserves a wide audience.

Dear supporters,
We have all struggled to have the Academy of Motion Pictures award
a posthumous Oscar to Errol Flynn.
I’m sad to share with you all that the academy will not be able to do
so. The president of the Academy, Mr. Sid Ganis has informed me that the
academy will not and has not given the award posthumously. It is a sad
moment for me personally and I know to the many who share with me the joy
and happiness that Errol Flynn brought to the screen and to our hearts.
Thank you for you support,
Rory
